Get U Noticed client Grant Gavin gave a thought provoking talk to Durban North Varsity College Students and Gaduates about the importance of personal branding.
A Careers Evening, aimed at final year Varsity College students and recent graduates to provide them with a platform to be made aware of the options available to them when they have completed their studies, was held recently on campus. Entrepreneur and the Owner/Broker of RE/MAX Panache, Grant Gavin who was a Guest Speaker at the event, told students to take note of the fact that their degree did not qualify them for any entitlement.
Explained Gavin “The job market is tough, and you will be competing with so many other graduates, so investing in yourself and your personal brand is so important. I cannot stress enough how vital it is to make the right choices as they will determine where you end up. In order to become successful you have to form good habits and change your thinking by placing a bigger focus on personal development and growth. You have completed your studies, now you have to go to work on your biggest asset – yourselves.”
He also told the students to be aware of falling into the typical “employee” mindset. “Globally, only 13% of employees have an intrapreneurial mindset, and this sets them apart. These are the people who have the courage and flexibility to think out the box. You also need to be aware of perceptions and how you can influence them.” He said.
The evening was also a celebration of the academic success so far of the students. According to the Career Centre Co-ordinator, Lucie Bowyer. “It is really important for students to start preparing this early for graduate opportunities. The constant theme which ran through the evening was that personal branding is key.” Said Lucie.
Other companies present were Talksure and Mr Price who spoke of opportunities within their companies as well as professionalism in the workplace.
