For someone who has made use of project managers for all of her property developments and sees enormous value in working with a project manager, Margaret Hirsch, who hosts a free weekly Entrepreneurs Workshop with fellow host and Business Coach, Marlene Powell, was delighted to welcome Labo Nkuku as Guest Speaker to the latest workshop.
Labo is a Project Management Professional and the founder of LABO WORLD. She is the current President of Project Management South Africa, KZN Branch, and also runs a South African community-based Meetup called The Leadership Square which is a public space for learning, developing, and networking to envision, embody and advance a more responsible society.
Labo spoke on the importance of project management in the business strategy. Said Labo “Imagine if someone stole your strategy. Would they succeed? Chances are that they would fail even if they had your strategy. Why? This is because the competitive advantage of any business is not in the boardroom where strategies are devised, but it is in the implementation of those strategies.
The implementation of strategy tests every area of your business because you need all areas of your business to make it happen. You need to pull internal and external resources and teams from marketing, legal, operations, engineering, human resources, suppliers, and customers – all working together towards a common strategic goal. Project management helps to direct people and activities towards the successful implementation of strategic goals on time, on budget, and within expected quality. Without proper project management, you will be pulling your hair out of frustration as your strategic projects will continue to miss deadlines and overrun on budget without realizing any strategic value”.
Marlene echoed Labo’s sentiments and said that one should be looking at the end result of how a business turns out after one’s times spent in it. “Looking for root cause analysis is important. It’s an excellent idea to hire someone to put a project management strategy in place as it can be time consuming for the business owner. It takes discipline and it’s vital for any business.” She stressed.
